An animal bedding manufacturer based in Manchester has introduced measures to guard against the spread of foot and mouth disease, following the recent outbreak in Surrey.
From today (7/8/07) Hadfield Wood Recyclers will disinfect every lorry arriving at its Droylsden-based site to ensure the risk of spreading the disease is kept to a minimum. The company will also require all visitors’ vehicles to be sprayed and lorry drivers and visitors to disinfect their footwear before being allowed on site.
Hadfields, a family run firm which has been operating for nearly 30 years, produces bedding for horse, cattle and poultry from recycled wood. Its unique selling point is that many of its bedding products help to maintain and protect animal health and it is therefore crucial that its site is kept free from infection.
Vicki Hughes, Strategic Development Director for the company, said: “Much of our bedding offers health benefits to animals and therefore the manufacturing of it needs to be done in a clean and bio-secure environment.
“We have vehicles coming on to the site everyday to collect bedding which is then delivered to destinations, including farms, all over the country. We also have lorries delivering wood for recycling. It is vital that we do all we can not only to keep our site free from infection, but to help prevent the spread of the disease nationally.”
